Photo Inspiration

These are the images that inspired Children of the Lost Gods. Ever since childhood, I have been fascinated with ancient cultures and their lore. My passion led to a life-long pursuit of researching Greek mythology. When I decided to write my first novel, I knew there would be readers, much like myself, with an oddity of interest and a passion for legends. My goal was to create a tale that would capture the imagination of readers and introduce them to a world from long ago, but not long forgotten.

Greek Soldiers

Researching Ancient Greek customs, stories, and lifestyles was one of the best parts of the writing process for the retelling. Learning about fighting tactics of hoplites and their weapons was especially interesting. I even included a reference to an legendary fighting unit called the Sacred Band of Thebes.

Oldest Shipwreck Discovered

Off the Bulgarian coast, just over a mile beneath the surface of the Black Sea, archaeologists discovered what they believe is the world’s oldest intact shipwreck. They think it’s the world’s oldest intact shipwreck. Measuring some 75 feet (23 meters) long, the ship is believed to be an ancient Greek trading vessel. With its mast still standing, and its rudders and rowing benches still in place, it has lain undisturbed on the ocean floor for more than 2,400 years. Long an important trade route between Europe and Asia, the Black Sea was particularly so in the ancient world, when Greek ships sailed from the Mediterranean carrying goods to its many colonies lining the Black Sea coast.

This discovery helped fuel my imagination not only for the story of A Greek Tale but also for the idea that my tale was a lost legend. In my head, an ancient scroll or tablet was discovered within the wreckage of the ship, and it told an expanded account of Icarus. It was fun to envision my story being unearthed and translated by scholars into the one I wrote.

The Legend of the Minotaur

Perhaps one of the most captivating monsters of Greek Mythology is the Minotaur. This beast probably terrified countless children and men as its tale was recounted throughout ancient times. Unlike most mythical creatures, the Minotaur’s presence expands through three different stories. Pasiphae and Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus, and Theseus and the Minotaur are the stories that include creature in some form, so you could view him as the world’s first trilogy.

Daedalus and Icarus

The original story of Daedalus and Icarus is a tragic one. It’s supposed to teach us about hubris and to listen to your elders. Those lessons were lost on me, however. The tale made me wonder what it would be like to fly on wings of my design. As captivating as the original story was, I felt that Icarus’ story was in need of an update and retelling. You can’t build the world’s first flying machine and not go on an epic adventure.
